basic info
Name: Kargath Bladefist
Age: Early 30s
Canon: World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor
History: WoW Wiki article on Kargath Bladefist
In short, Kargath is the Chieftain of the Shattered Hand, an Orcish clan on the world of Draenor. Born a slave to the ogres of the Gorian Empire, Kargath fought as a gladiator in a quest to win his freedom, promised to any orc who could could kill one hundred opponents. He did. But his reward was the betrayal that awaited all other gladiators who succeeded: cast back into the dungeons below Highmaul, to rot in squalor and lost hope. That ploy did not work on Kargath. In rage and desperation, Kargath deliberately tore off his own hand to escape his shackles, freed the other Orcish prisoners, and led a bloody rebellion that ended in Kargath holding aloft the head of the Gorian emperor to the roar of his new clan and army – the Shattered Hand. In place of his left hand, Kargath attached an enormous scythe, earning him the sobriquet “Bladefist.”
personality
Cruel, barbaric, and without a whisper of mercy, Kargath is devoted to nothing but pain, combat, and rapine. His experiences have left him believing freedom is something achieved only through power, and he’s resolved to never again be powerless. If he wants something, he’ll take it, no matter what pain is required. Especially if pain is required, in fact. Kargath indulges in pain, even self-inflicted, and celebrates it as a symbol of strength – the muse of life itself. And he takes a definite and devilish pleasure in the suffering of the weak. Cruelty is as much of a sport for him as the gladiator battles of his past.
Strengths:
- He is utterly and completely confident in himself and his abilities. In fact, he may not even consciously regard the quality as “confidence” – just the unstoppable savagery that is demanded of any who want to live as long as he does. His allies will certainly not lack for nerve if he is accompanying them into battle. As far as Kargath is concerned, there is no foe he cannot slay and no feat he cannot achieve through his own strength and sheer force of will. He abandoned fear very long ago.
- He is an experienced chieftain and can lead and organize and command a large force, albeit through the most savage and ruthless example. He has a sense of logic and order - insofar as these things can result from domination.
- Though his air and bearing may suggest a coarse intellect, Kargath is surprisingly clever and resourceful. He has his wits about him. He can even laugh at a good joke, assuming it’s to his black and sordid sense of humor.
Flaws: Oh, boy.
- His taste for violence, love for battle, and lust for spreading pain ultimately makes him nearly impossible to control, and probably not even that versatile a resource from a military perspective. His grasp of subtlety ends at sneak attacks or an ambush on a moonless night. If his more strategically-minded allies have a plan, it’s almost better to leave Kargath out of it than fill him in and expect him to heed instruction. He may be able to cooperate during first engagement with the enemy, but once his blood is up, there’s no telling when it’ll come down.
- He trusts nothing and no one but himself. The only way to connect with him is through a shared taste for inflicting pain, or a belief in personal autonomy through bloodshed. Kargath never knew his parents, he never knew a loving or nurturing childhood, only slavery and abuse at the hands of larger and crueler masters, and he is a singular product of that world.
- While not unintelligent, Kargath is ruled by his passions, not his rational faculties. More critically, it is absurdly easy to goad him into a fight. If you offer a monkey a choice between broccoli and chocolate, the monkey will pick chocolate every time. Fighting is Kargath Bladefist’s chocolate.
Miscellaneous:
- Kargath does not discriminate among genders when it comes to ability. The only thing he cannot abide is weakness. He regarded female orcs among the Shattered Hand no differently, as long as they fought and killed for him. His attitude toward other races is less charitable, but less out of obvious racism and more out of his perspective that everything that isn’t fighting alongside or underneath him is either an enemy or easy, stupid prey.
- As for his powers: for Enervation, I plan to depict him as not terribly aware or even respectful of magic and the like. His brief interactions with Gul’dan and Ner’zhul while in the Iron Horde did not leave him with a favorable impression of their “conjuring.”
- Despite his love of carnage and pain, Kargath has an understated love of freedom and exploration, as he grew up never knowing these things. He loves anything that gets him out into the world, especially on horseback (or wolfback, as is his preferred steed, though he may have to settle for horses since there aren’t many wolves of Draenor’s size to tame!). He can be surprisingly…less unapproachable if he’s having a great time on the road. Even better if he’s downwind of a fetching (if scrawny) human lass.
game plans
Starting Faction: Kargath will fight very willingly on the behalf of Warlord Euramar of Wulgrimm.
Goals: Take one look at this guy and tell me you don’t see the perfect guy for the Light Faction to tangle with, thwart, tick off, and beat up for loot! I kid – well, only mostly. Kargath is a Lurtz/”dumb muscle” kind of character (although he isn’t actually DUMB, just…so violent he could scare a sheet of calculus homework into doing itself). I’d totally love to play him as a recurring and menacing foe for Felana’s forces, but really, I also want to play him as a constant headache for his more pragmatic allies on Euramar’s side because the dude just can’t go one day without wanting to chop something in two, burn someplace down, or carry off a girl. I like when the villains in a story aren’t one big happy family and there are some wrenches in the gears, and Kargath is an industrial-strength wrench.
